Nigerian police nab 'major' gun-runner for Boko Haram

Musa Garba Abubakar arrested with two others, accused of gun making, sales, in North Central region.

LAGOS, Nigeria (AA) - Nigerian secret police said on Saturday it had arrested a major gun maker, arms-runner, and a covert linkman/courier for Boko Haram.

Tony Opuiyo, spokesman of the country's department of state service, said in a statement that Musa Garba Abubakar was arrested along with two others, Umar Khalil Muhammed and Muhammed Yakubu Tahir, who served as his marketers.

Opuiyo said Abubakar and the others were arrested on March 2 in the north central town of Jos.

"During his arrest, 2 pistols, 80 rounds of live ammunition, and several sensitive documents were recovered from him," said Opuiyo.

"In a bid to employ propaganda to manipulate the international community against the efforts of the Federal Government, in the ongoing war against terror in the North-West region, (Abubakar) approached a foreign mission in Nigeria for logistics and financial support to fight Boko Haram."

“However, unknown to the mission, he is actually an unauthorized gun-maker/runner with intent for mischief and communal strife in the North Central region."
In a separate development, Opuiyo said the secret police also arrested a three-man terrorist cell belonging to the outlawed Ansaru, a breakaway faction of Boko Haram.

"The trio were members of an extremist cell under the coordination of YAKUBU, with affiliation to the proscribed extremist group ANSARU, and have been perfecting plans to travel to Sudan, for terrorist training with other radical elements of the group," the statement added.
